Kate Angelos-Mather, Mental Health Therapist; and Julie Penton, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (all from My School’s Health Center); Dave Hancock, Athletic Director; Marie Marson, Counseling and Guidance Dept.; Audrey Hudson, Senior Student; Jessica, Senior Student.

My Health Center located in Room 109 serves over 3,000 students per year with and without health insurance. Ailments range from headaches to chronic diseases. Nurses provide help to students taking medications and facilitate communication with families and doctors. Health care professionals are available for counseling and referrals for mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, peer pressure, and substance abuse, as well. My Health Center serves all the feeder schools into South.

Dave Hancock, Athletic Director, said we have over 400 athletes at South, and almost half of the student body is active in some sport at school through club involvement. USAA sports are considered Tier 1 and they are funded through the district. Sports such as water polo, rowing, lacrosse, and skiing are Tier 2-4 activities and are funded by the individuals. Not all kids compete in sports, but they like to participate. In track, for instance, some kids just like to run the trails, but not compete in the contests. The clubs are always looking for more kids to participate.

Marie Marson spoke about Counseling and Guidance at South. South has four guidance counselors who go into the classrooms and meet with every kid. Students have assignments and are encouraged to use the Career Center. Students can get credit for working at a job outside of school in the School to Work Program.

Audrey Hudson, a senior student at South, spoke about the drama program. She has been involved in drama and choir at South for four years. Early involvement in drama entails improvisation and stage help, teambuilding and trust. Students who are not interested in being on stage can participate in StageCraft by designing sets, painting, moving sets, sound and microphone, lights, etc. There is a computer lab being installed back stage. Students enrolled in Drama 1 and 2 get to take trips and meet other students at other schools. There is a treble choir just for girls to work on harmony and blend.

Jessica is in charge of clubs at South. Students invent their own clubs with a wide range of interests. Some of the clubs are academic, math, robotics, ultimate Frisbee, lacrosse, equitation, etc. Pie-O-Neers is a group that meets at a member’s house to bake pies for charitable causes. There are Student Unions to give students support at South. The Harry Potter Club is the largest with 60 students signed up. South also has a thriving Debate Club.

Academics Unlimited is a tutoring center in Room 6 across from the Career Center which is open all day. It is staffed by students, parents and teachers.

Getting to Know South-This Wednesday

Getting to Know South
Program Starts at 7:30pm

A Panel of experts will highlight South's programs that ALL students can be involved in, to create a full, enriching high school experience: Academics, Arts, Clubs, Athletics will be represented to share with parents the range of activities offered to South students.

Get a sneak preview of the upcoming Drama production of “West Side Story” and hear about the Gala set for November 5, 2010. Principal, announced information about programs offered by SEHS this summer:
· Incoming freshmen can sign up for Summerbridge, a one-month, morning program that introduces students to the high school
· APEX is a program through which students can get their academic life on track by taking Credit Recovery classes – South has a teacher in the computer lab who can monitor on-line learning. This is a different kind of delivery system for students, and it can be an opportunity to accelerate as well.
· Algebra opportunity -- Students can take tests to get credit for graduation or turn an Incomplete into a grade.
· Junior students will be working on their Senior Project during the summer. They are required to find a mentor in an area of career interest they may have and spend 25 hours learning about the field they have chosen. They will be required to develop a focus question, keep a journal, a log of hours spent, write a 5 paragraph essay and make a presentation.
Parent participants split into 3 groups to attend 20 minute presentations:
· Eugene Recreation Dept. -- Amy from the River House, the Youth Leadership program where teens can volunteer and learn new skills for free. This group meets every week to do activities, such as rock climbing, rafting, and special events. It’s a great way to get connected and often leads to employment. Youth To Make It Happen focuses on activism, empowerment through acting, drama, music and dance. Teens can go on line to apply for a job and fill out an application for temporary employment, but Amy suggests that applicants follow up by going to the River House in person.
Ray Fey manages the three pools in town: Amazon, Echo Hollow and Sheldon. Teens must go through him to apply for lifeguard jobs. He suggested that applicants first go to the pool where they want to work to place an application. Programs are also available for training to become a lifeguard through American Red Cross Certification. Swim & Tennis at Echo Hollow pool begins July 12 for kids 6 – 15 years of age. Summer Swim and Water Polo is also offered MWF for the entire summer for $50 with a barbeque at the end of the summer.
· Experience Counts: Exploring Summer Jobs and Internships – Jocelyn LaMar provided handouts and information on summer jobs, internships and volunteer opportunities that help students develop skills that will be valuable for employment. She encouraged teens to check out Maud Kerns, Science Factory, Campfire USA and YMCA for Counselor In Training programs. Peace Health now has 15-20 spots for volunteers – contact Lynn Lacey. Next year’s seniors will be looking for mentors for their senior project – if you have an occupation or career that may be interesting to a student and can mentor for 25 hours this summer, please contact Jocelyn at the Career Center.
· Sizzling Summer Reading – Sarah Prater-Eichner presented information on book lists and Young Writers Club.

**Materials from this program are currently displayed in the Career & College Center.

Information on Program Planning

On May 26, 2010 Parent Council will have a mini-program on the School Improvement Plan. If you've ever wondered what a School Improvement Plan is or what the Site Council does, this meeting is for you. Randy Bernstein will introduce our program and take questions and feedback. The program is from 7:00-7:30pm in the cafeteria.

Planning is already underway for next year's programs. Parents have expressed interest in topics such as Greening SEHS and School Funding. Have a topic that you'd like to see on that schedule? If you are willing to work on that one program, we are willing to consider doing it. Planning a program requires thinking through a topic, helping find speakers and being present the night of the program. Not a huge commitment--maybe a good fit for you?

If you're interested in helping with a program next year, please contact Helen Beardsworth, hbeardswo@gmail.com or Jen Wyld, wyld@efn.org.

Summer Ideas Program is Coming April 28

WHAT AM I GONNA' DO THIS SUMMER?
7:00pm - 8:00pm
SEHS Cafeteria

This program will offer parents and students information about valuable, constructive ways to spend summer. The format was question and answer.

How do parents know if their rules are too strict or too lenient? What is the community norm?:
Eugene can be a difficult place because it is a university community. It is important for parents to use the student directory to contact other parents. Call parents of kids your kids are hanging out with. Use of cell phones makes it hard for parents to know where their kids are. Once you’ve made your rules, it’s important to be consistent. It’s a conversation that keeps happening. Make sure there are consequences for violations and follow through on consequences. It’s hard work for parents, but kids need to know they care.

Officer Z clarified laws about prescription drugs. It is illegal to possess prescription drugs unless they are prescribed to you. It is unlawful to have drugs outside the prescription bottle. It is illegal to take someone else’s prescription drugs. It does not happen very often here, but parents should be aware if their kids are purchasing drugs on-line. Be aware of packages arriving from Mexico or Canada. If kids show changes in personality, address it and get help. Parents should get rid of old medications they don’t need and keep track of medications they use regularly. It is important to talk to kids about the dangers of taking drugs with alcohol.

What strategies do you use to help a friend who is using drugs? How do you show your concern?
I would talk to the friend. When you first start using, you don’t know how it takes over your body. Let them know what they are getting into.
I would try to notify someone of authority.

How do you avoid kids getting loaded and getting in a car?
Let your kids know they can depend on you for a ride. Officer Z clarified that there is a 12 to 4 am curfew that is unenforced. It is a civil penalty, not a crime. A kid may receive a citation, but nothing legal will happen. Sometimes the police will use the curfew to pick up a kid, if it looks like they are getting into trouble.
It is hard to make the decision not to get into the car. Research shows that the frontal lobe of the brain, the inhibition center, doesn’t mature until 24 years of age. Excitement, fun and risk interfere with reason. Repetitive instruction will make a difference, called strengthening and pruning, the neural pathways will develop with repetitive use.

How can we trust our teens to make these decisions when we know their brains are not fully developed?
Many kids are getting into cars with kids who have restricted licenses (just passed, but required to wait 6 months before allowed to take passengers). Parents need to be aware of the consequences. It is a $200 fine if a driver with a restricted license has unrelated passengers under 21 in the car while they are driving. Also, parents can be sued if their young driver has an accident with unrelated passengers under 21 in the car. If parents and kids are aware of the liability exposure, they are less likely to take the risk.
Evidence is out there that chronic use of alcohol, drugs slows the maturation process.
Question to student panelists: Are you finding you are getting support from your friends not to drink or do drugs?
My friends support me because they know I do sports.
We can remain friends and not drink or do drugs. Not everybody uses, but it depends in a big way who you travel with.
Officer Z noted that a first-time violation will require you to show up at juvenile court, but recently violators have received notices that due to lack of funding they need not show up. Eugene police are in the process of developing an education program that violators will be required to attend. If you have an alcohol or drug abuse offense, you may have your driver’s license suspended, be suspended from school, or not have access to financial aid when applying for college.

A parent asked, “What does the school provide for instruction to students from teachers or peer groups?
Randy Bernstein replied: The school requires health education in freshman year. Health classes in junior and senior year cover alcohol, drug, nutrition and STD education. ASAP is a group of peers trained to meet with freshmen. Sport coaches have athletes sign a contract in order to play a sport.
Student panelist: ASAP did not affect me much. It’s a lot of information on drugs and alcohol, but it does not address why students use. I used drugs because of depression, not for recreation.
Another student panelist: The people who were talking to me about what to do and not to do were users. I knew what they were doing outside of school. A lot of kids participate in ASAP as a resume stuffer. There is hypocrisy to it.
Randy acknowledged their comments.

How do you justify your own use of alcohol or drugs to your children if you use?
Student panelist: It’s legal for parents. If you are a parent who uses, it is really hard to tell your kid not to use. You are their number one role model.
There are some kids who decide not to use because they have seen what it does to their parents.
Be careful of the message you are sending. If you are drinking to medicate (I need a drink. I’ve had a really hard day.), kids hear what you are saying. Keep tabs on how much alcohol you have in the fridge, the cupboard. A lot of kids get their alcohol from home.
Every kid has the potential to be a user. Your kid may have a 4. Grade average, but they may be using, too. Parents think, “Not my kid.”
You don’t need to share everything you did. You can tell kids that you will tell them when they are 25. You can phrase it, “I had a good friend who…”
Student panelist: My mom’s stories made me lose respect for her – I didn’t feel like I was letting anybody down by using.

Officer Z encouraged parents with questions to contact him by e-mail at Zeltvay@4j.lane.edu

The State of the Union

On Wednesday, March 31, 2010 we will have a combined education program and Parent Council meeting. But somehow it seems somewhat intimidating and scary to see your own child going through the paces of meeting that special someone (most likely through South Eugene’s network on Facebook). Or, perhaps they aren’t dating like we did in high school and you are wondering about that. Let’s talk parent to parent to share how we are navigating the waters of how to react, how to not overreact and how to support our children through this wonderful, but emotion-filled stage of their high school lives. Some current South Eugene High School students and a local expert on teen relationships will join the discussion, as well. David will be joined by Ellen Brunson-Newton, SEHS Career Center director as they talk about the habits our college-bound kids need to develop before they leave high school and what we as parents can do now to prepare them.

David is an associate professor of educational policy and leadership and the founding director of the UO’s Center for Educational Policy Research. He wrote College Knowledge (Jossey-Bass, 2005) as a primer on what it really takes for students to achieve academic success after high school and how they can prepare for a successful college experience. “This book is not a test prep for the SAT,” he adds. “But it lines up with the knowledge and skills you need to do well on any college admissions test and in any freshman college course. It’s a down-to-earth, practical reality check for kids in high school.”
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Graduating from Classic South and IHS

April 4th- Did you know that one of the #1 documented predictors for students succeeding in college has to do with what classes that have taken in grades 9th through 12th? Join us for an extremely important and informative Parent Education Series on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the far end of the South Eugene High School cafeteria to learn from Ellen Brunson-Newton and other South administrators everything you need to know about our high school graduation requirements. We'll focus on both Classic South and International High School requirements, the new senior project requirements and the career planning aspects of what it takes to successfully graduate. This would be an excellent time to involve students in the planning process, as well, so we encourage both parents and South students of all grades to attend. We'll also be inviting our middle school parents to attend to get a heads up on how to plan now for graduation from South.

December 5th - Parent Council invites you to our next Parent Education Series on Tuesday, December 5th for a conversation on "Curfews and Parties: What we need to know and how we can support each other and our high schoolers in managing the teenage social scene." We'll be joined by two high school counselors to discuss what the laws are regarding curfews and to lead us through this important discussion.

January 10th - Who are the Millenials and why aren't they acting the way we did? The Millenials were born between 1982 and today are the largest generation since the Baby Boomers. Come to hear a presentation on how their values, behaviors and choices differ from the Gen Xers (1964-1981) and the Baby Boomers (1946-1963). We guarantee you'll learn a great deal about your teens and yourself!

February 8th - Teen Time Management Skills. Are you racing around trying to fit in a million things, and helping your kids do the same thing? We all have the same 24 hour period of time, learn how to manage yourself within that finite amount and sanely accomplish the most important. Then share your new tools with your kids. Our presenter will be Liz Coleman, SEHS parent, who manages the Lane Community College Tutoring Center and teaches Lane College Success classes, as well.
